Roma announced their first summer signing on Sunday night, Neil El Aynaoui, and will soon formalize the second, Evan Ferguson, who’s already in town for the medicals. Instead, Richard Rios is headed to Benfica instead.
According to Calciomercato, the Giallorossi have spent €23M plus €2M add-ons for the former Lens midfielder. He’s coming off a breakout season where he bagged 8 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches. His former team had acquired him from Nancy two years ago.
While Roma invested in El Aynaoui, Ferguson is transferring on loan with a €2M initial fee and a €38M option to buy, Tuttomercatoweb reports. An ACL tear halted his rise at Brighton. He spent the past six months at West Ham. He has 68 Premier League games under his belt, during which he bagged 13 goals and provided 3 assists. The 20-year-old has starred 22 times with Ireland, scoring 5 times.
The Giallorossi remain hot on the heels of Wesley, Fabrizio Romano informs. They have basically met the request and are waiting for Flamengo to find a replacement. Instead, they have abandoned their pursuit of Rios. They were on the verge of agreeing with Palmeiras, but he wasn’t as convinced about joining as they would have liked him to be, Corriere dello Sport relays.
The former is a bit of a gamble, but they didn’t pay too much for him, and they probably aren’t done bolstering their midfield. The young striker would have to really shine to be redeemed at that number. They had to thread the needle there, as they splurged on Artem Dovbyk last year.
