Sunderland could face Roma competition if they revive interest in Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi this summer, with the Black Cats described as the only obstacle to a move.
Earlier this year, Bologna chairman Claudio Fenucci said: “I've always said we'd prefer to keep everyone, even though we know that in reality, certain offers can be tough, especially if the Premier League comes knocking. If we add the club's operating costs to labour costs, we get to €110 million; if we add depreciation and taxes, we get to almost €160 million. It's obvious that such a large-scale management, built to be competitive, cannot help but be financed by some sales. We've reinvested some of the proceeds from the sales in the market, and perhaps we'll invest some more.” He was speaking to Il Resto del Carlino.
The Black Cats were strongly linked with Lucumi last summer, with reports suggesting an official offer was submitted but rejected as Bologna failed to find a replacement. Sunderland then turned their attention to what became a successful move for Omar Alderete.
Recent reports indicate Bologna are actively seeking a replacement for Lucumi, raising the possibility of a summer exit. Sunderland are believed to want defensive reinforcements, although it is unclear whether Lucumi will be on their shortlist again.
In Italy it is claimed Roma have the Colombia international back on their list amid speculation over Evan Ndicka’s future at the Stadio Olimpico. The Ivory Coast defender is said to be attracting Premier League interest, with a fee of around £35m reportedly sought, and any departure could lead to a move for Lucumi.
