Sunderland are in advanced talks over a new contract for Romaine Mundle, with a breakthrough close.

Sky Sports News first reported the push to keep the 23-year-old, who has two years left, and said the deal is not yet finalised but could be confirmed before the Premier League season.

Several clubs registered interest in the 23-year-old after he entered the final two years of his contract, but Sunderland have rebuffed all advances so far.

He faces strong competition on the left from Chemsdine Talbi and Nilson Angulo, yet he will count towards the club’s homegrown quota in the Europa League this season.

His progress on Wearside has been hampered by three serious hamstring injuries. Any new deal would reflect the club and Régis Le Bris’s conviction that he can be a success in the top tier when fit.

Mundle featured prominently in the early pre-season fixtures. He missed the 2-0 win over RC Lens due to a minor ankle issue.

He has been pictured in training at the Academy of Light and could feature when the Black Cats face Stade Rennais in their final pre-season game on Saturday.

Fellow left winger Simon Adingra is expected to depart this summer, though that situation could be complicated by an injury sustained on the club’s US tour.
