Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle has undergone hamstring surgery and shared a hospital-bed update this week.

He suffered a fresh hamstring injury against Fulham at the Stadium of Light last weekend, with early fears soon confirmed. The player said in a post that this is the hardest period he has faced, that he has overcome it before and will again, and he thanked supporters. He also shared a photo from his hospital bed, his leg in a brace.

The 23-year-old has shown promise when fit, but injuries have disrupted his rhythm. Sunderland have not set a recovery timescale, and procedures of this type typically keep players out for a significant spell.

The timing is far from ideal as Sunderland navigate a demanding Premier League schedule. The update drew well-wishes from team-mates and fans.

It has been bruising off the pitch too, with alleged racist abuse aimed at Mundle online after his substitute appearance against Fulham now under police investigation.

There were four reports of abuse towards Premier League players over the weekend, with Mundle among those targeted alongside Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare, Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri.

The abuse drew widespread condemnation, with calls for action and for players not to have to tolerate such behaviour.
