Cardiff City midfielder Romaine Sawyers admitted that relief was the overriding emotion after the Bluebirds overcame Reading 1-0 last night.

The Bluebirds left it late at the Cardiff City Stadium to do so, though, with Romaine Sawyers match-winning strike not coming until the 91st minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Sawyers, who now has three goals to his name for the season, admitted it was a massive relief for the club to get their first home win since October.

“Very relieved,” Sawyers responded when asked how happy he was at putting an end to that barren home run on Sky Sports.

“I think we’ve always had the confidence and belief and the gaffer’s instilled that in us since he’s came in and it’s finally came to fruition so it’s good.

“I think with us playing first and the rest of the teams playing tomorrow it gives a real pressure to them and a sense of release for us.”

Commenting further, Sawyers was asked about his first strike since August, but said he would be happy whoever was scoring at this stage and given Cardiff’s situation.

“I think if anybody scores we’ll be happy at this stage,” Sawyers added.

“Whether it’s me, whether it’s our strikers, defenders, we just need that rub of the green.

“Fortunately it was me today but we go again.”

The Verdict

What a big week for Cardiff City it has been.

Two wins at the bottom of the Championship when things are as tight as they have been are huge.

That is evidenced by the club now moving up to 20th in the league standings.

The Bluebirds are now five points clear of the drop zone, and if they can keep up this good form in the coming weeks, they may find themselves well out of the relegation battle come the end of the season.
