Romano explains why MUFC are having trouble reaching contract agreeement with Fernandes after Ornstein confirms ‘impasse’

Manchester United have been actively trying to tie Bruno Fernandes down to another long-term deal.

As things stand, his contract at Old Trafford will run until June 2027, though United do have the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months.

Yet, with the side still showing signs of weakness, having lost twice and drawn once in the opening four Premier League games, you can see why keeping the captain around is viewed as a priority for club chiefs.

David Ornstein provided a concerning update for supporters ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby when he revealed that talks between Fernandes and United regarding a new deal had reached an ‘impasse’.

Fabrizio Romano has subsequently shed some light on the situation, explaining that all parties are having trouble agreeing on how bonuses, clauses and the general structure of an improved contract may look.

Fernandes has also explained on numerous occasions throughout his six-and-a-half-year Red Devils tenure that he wants assurances the club are in a place to compete for the biggest honours, so this term could be pretty decisive in proving their ambition to him.

Failing to win silverware this campaign would see United oversee three trophyless seasons, with their most recent success being the FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City at the end of 2023/2024.

They kick off their Carabao Cup journey tomorrow night against a notorious bogey opponent in the form of Brighton and Hove Albion at home, and will be adamant to make amends for last season, when they exited the competition at the first hurdle to League Two outfit Grimsby Town.

United also ended matchweek four in 13th place, so must enter the international break on the back of a convincing win over Fulham this weekend.
