Chelsea are bracing themselves for a serious late push from Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez, with the Premier League champions preparing to submit a formal offer before the summer transfer window closes. The Argentina international has now reportedly opened the door to moving to the Etihad Stadium, adding fresh pressure on Chelsea as the September 1 deadline approaches.

The Blues are not actively pushing Fernandez out, but their stance remains that a sale could happen if City meet their valuation and Chelsea have enough time to strengthen their own midfield.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man City intend to make another attempt to sign Fernandez and are preparing an official bid.

FootballTransfers reports that Fernandez is now open to the switch, while Chelsea will only approve a departure if the financial package is right and they can secure a suitable replacement.

Chelsea have been demanding around £120m for the 25-year-old, meaning City would need to make Fernandez one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history.

The uncertainty has also been reflected in Xabi Alonso’s public comments. Chelsea manager refused to guarantee Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge, although he praised the midfielder’s attitude and performances in training.

Chelsea should only sell if the price is right

Fernandez being open to Man City makes this situation considerably more dangerous for Chelsea.

Previously, the Blues could simply point to their £120m valuation and wait. Now there is a realistic possibility of City making an offer while the player is receptive to leaving.

Fernandez is entering his prime and remains one of the squad’s most technically gifted midfielders.

Losing him would immediately strengthen City while creating a major hole in Alonso’s team.

That is why Chelsea’s replacement condition is crucial.

A £120m fee would represent excellent financial business, but money is far less useful when there are only days remaining to spend it.

Chelsea have already explored alternatives such as Alex Scott, but Bournemouth have repeatedly resisted their approaches.
