Chelsea are set to sell Tino Anjorin to Empoli, according to Fabrizio Romano, who has given a handy Saturday afternoon update for us.

The Italian insider just Tweeted out that a deal has been “verbally agreed” between Chelsea and Serie A side Empoli for the transfer of the Cobham product.

The fee isn’t mentioned, but Transfermarkt value the attacking midfielder at just €700k, so it’s hard to see much more than €3-4m at most. The youngster will fly for his medical once the “final details” of the permanent transfer are concluded.

The sporting directors have a huge number of contracted players they want to sell or loan out, and each one brings them closer to having a more normal setup at the training ground. Player by player, the bomb squad is shrinking as we approach the transfer deadline. This was one of the small fries rather than the big fish, but it all counts.

The rapid rise and fall of football wonderkids

Anjorin’s fall from grace has never been more clear than through the total lack of news or rumours about his future through this summer. A few years back he was one of the most promising members of the loan army, and was considered among our brightest talents. Fast forward to this summer, and suddenly he’s not even generally mentioned when people talk about our bloated first team setup.

Bad loans and injuries that affected his playing time since those early days have made him almost a forgotten man, buried beneath an avalanche of signings. But we all remember the talent we saw there, and a move to a European league is fun. We really hope he gets into the team and goes on to have a great career. He’s still just 22, and can yet do some big things.
