Fabrizio Romano reveals Manchester United will only be able to land Lewis Hall this summer through an outrageous bid.

After buying Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the Red Devils have apparently put their midfield plans on hold, instead pursuing another left-back.

Luke Shaw is the only recognised player for this role in the first team, as Tyrell Malacia left the club after seeing out his contract, while Patrick Dorgu has been exclusively used as a winger in Michael Carrick’s system. Harry Amass was suggested as a solution, but the management is more inclined to sell him.

Since the start of the summer, all reliable sources have agreed that Hall is Man Utd’s top target for the left-back role.

The 21-year-old is viewed as Shaw’s ideal long-term successor, and in the meantime, he can take some of the burden off his old countryman’s shoulders.

In the latest video posted on his official YouTube channel, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirms that Man Utd’s next signing could be a left-back.

However, the transfer market guru believes MUFC will most likely miss out on Hall due to the large expenses.

Romano explains that Newcastle are determined to keep the young left-back, having already sold three key players in Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes, not to mention replacing their head coach Eddie Howe with Matthias Jaissle.

Therefore, the journalist warns Man Utd that only a ‘crazy’ offer could change the Magpies’ mind. Otherwise, they can forget about signing the player.

What will Man Utd do after Lewis Hall blow

At the start of the summer, Man Utd were expected to splash the cash on their midfield overhaul, with some sources claiming the club has allocated a £200 million transfer kitty, similar to the one INEOS spent last season on the attack.

However, the reality has been drastically different, at least at this stage of the summer, with the club only spending a combined £83 million on Santos and Tielemans. Hence, it’s hard to imagine Man Utd officials going ‘crazy’ on a back-up left-back.

Instead, we can expect the club to turn to other, more cost-efficient profiles on the market, with some sources mentioning Fulham’s Antonee Robinson as the main alternative for Hall.

The other solution is to keep Amass at Carrick’s disposal, or urge the manager to deploy Dorgu in his original left-back role.
