Romário backs Zico over Maracanã scoring record

Romário has backed Zico’s stance, rejecting attempts to split Maracanã’s history into 'old' and 'new' top scorer lists.

Zico railed against the 'new Maracanã' label and a separate top scorer count, insisting: "There is only one top scorer, me. Maracanã is the same." He said this on Basticast.

Romário echoed that view, saying the Maracanã is one stadium and its history should not be split. He argued Zico’s feats cannot be erased and called him the ground’s leading scorer, while adding that every player must forge his own path.

The venue was renovated and reopened in April 2013, after which some began distinguishing records set before and after the changes.

Across the stadium’s full history, Zico leads with 319 goals as a professional. He is followed by Roberto Dinamite on 201, then Romário with 190 and Doval on 112.

In the count disputed by Zico, Pedro heads the 'new Maracanã' list with 111 since the reopening. He is followed by Gabigol on 82 and Bruno Henrique with 65, both for Flamengo and Santos.
