Tottenham travel to Manchester United on Saturday at 13:30 in matchweek 25, mired in a six-match Premier League winless run and deepening unrest, despite repeated public blasts from captain Romero.
According to L'Équipe, Spurs are now far from the Big Six they hoped to join, peering over their shoulders with only nine points separating them from West Ham, the first relegation spot, and a 2-2 at Manchester City did little to calm tensions.
Two days after that draw, Romero, substituted at half-time through illness, posted an incendiary message, saying he tried to play despite feeling unwell and that, with fewer than 11 players available, the situation was incredible and shameful. In early January, after a 2-3 defeat to Bournemouth, he apologised to fans and accused others of staying silent in crises, pledging to keep working together.
The slide has continued, from fifth to 14th over three months. Their last league win was on 28 December at Crystal Palace, 1-0, and the United trip offers little comfort. Romero positions himself as a voice for players who see successive boards as culpable, with Champions League last-16 qualification offering scant relief. He overstated the absences last weekend, yet four academy players and Brazil Under-17 international Souza, 19, a €15m winter signing, were named in the squad.
Three weeks ago the hierarchy installed former Ajax coach John Heitinga as assistant. Goals remain scarce, with Richarlison out until late February, and two of Spurs’ top three scorers are centre-backs Romero and Micky Van de Ven on four apiece. Any move to sanction Romero after his remarks has been put on hold.
