Ronald Koeman has provided an update on the fitness of Jurrien Timber ahead of the Champions League final, with the 24-year-old in a race to prove his fitness before Arsenal’s clash with PSG.

Timber has missed the last 14 matches in all competitions since injuring his groin against Everton in March, with fears that he could miss the final of Europe’s premier club competition this weekend against the current holders.

However, the fullback was included in the Netherlands’ 26-man squad for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Speaking to the media after announcing the squad, Koeman appeared to confirm that the defender is set to return to training for Mikel Arteta’s side.

“We have two players on the standby list: Ian Maatsen and Lutsharel Geertruida, and this is linked to Jurrien Timber,” Koeman announced.

“The situation with him is that he was due to train with the squad today, to see how things look ahead of the weekend. They have the Champions League final on Saturday. We’ll have to wait and see if he’ll make it.”

Timber also spoke to media during Arsenal’s pre-Champions League Final media day last week, and was hopeful of facing Luis Enrique’s side in Budapest.

“Hopefully, yes,” Timber said. “There’s hope, but like I said, we’ll see. I’m working really hard, I’m trying really hard, and obviously playing in the Champions League final is a dream.

“So I will give everything, and with the World Cup as well, but obviously, first the Champions League final. It’s going to be amazing anyway.”

It waits to be seen whether the Dutchman will be available for the final, with Mikel Arteta expected to provide an update on his condition during the pre-match press conference on Friday.
