Ronan Curtis has admitted that while talks have yet to take place with Portsmouth over a new deal at Fratton Park, he has revealed that he still loves playing for the club.

The Republic of Ireland international’s current contract is set to expire following the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign.

Curtis will become a free-agent this summer if fresh terms are not offered to him.

The winger recently scored his second league goal of the season in Portsmouth’s win over Cheltenham Town and featured again for his side in their meeting with Bolton Wanderers earlier this week.

Despite falling behind in this fixture, Pompey scored three late goals in front of their supporters to secure victory.

Currently 10th in the League One standings, Portsmouth will be hoping to extend their current unbeaten run at this level to five games by picking up a positive result in their meeting with Cambridge United this weekend.

Ahead of this clash, Curtis has made an honest claim about his current situation at Pompey.

Speaking to The News, Curtis said: “Obviously I would like to have some clarification on my future, but it’s up to the gaffer, the board and the owners what they want to do.

“I am just focused on the football side of it, keeping myself fit and hopefully playing in the majority of the rest of the games as we try to push up the table for the play-offs.

“I’ve never been out of contract here before, this is the first time it’s happened, but I will leave that to the agent and club.

“I love it down here.

“The fans are amazing, the club’s amazing, my missus is from here, my new-born child was born here, obviously I love it here.

“But I have been here five years and you’ve got to see what the club wants to do at the end of the day.

“We will review it at the end of the season.

“I will talk to the club and the club can talk to me, we’ll see what happens.

“I want to finish the season strongly and it’s good to be back out there playing and getting on the scoresheet.”

Has former Pompey player Jed Wallace ever played for a London based club?

Yes No

The Verdict

Whereas Curtis is still clearly content with life at Portsmouth, he will need to deliver the goods on a consistent basis between now and the end of the campaign in order to earn a new deal.

The winger has not been able to match the attacking output that he produced in the previous term for Pompey this season.

While Curtis was directly involved in 16 league goals last season, he has only provided three direct goal contributions at this level in the current campaign.

Mousinho should only be looking to offer fresh terms to Curtis if he believes that he can get the best out of the 26-year-old over the course of the coming years.
