With the Wood sitting 79 places below their hosts in the footballing pyramid, they gave a good account of themselves and at half-time were more than good value for their scoreless stalemate.

Debutant Nathan Patterson was the Toffees’ best attacking outlet during that time but was surprisingly hooked at the interval and after it, the home side finally made the breakthrough from the flank the Scotsman had vacated.

After Salomón Rondón had twice went close, it was a case of third time lucky as he slid in at the near post to steer home a low cross from the right for the first goal Taye Ashby-Hammond has conceded in this year’s competition – a run of almost 420 minutes.

Patterson’s half-time replacement Richarlison almost added a second with a simple close range finish, only for it to be ruled out for handball but Everton did finish with a flourish when Rondón grabbed his second in the closing stages with a header that narrowly crossed the line.

Academy graduates Isaac Price and Reece Welch made late debuts for Frank Lampard’s side, who will face Crystal Palace away in the last eight.
