Rony will face Remo for the first time, a nostalgic meeting with the club that launched his career.
Born in Magalhães Barata, Pará, the forward came through Remo’s academy and was promoted in 2014 after standing out at the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior.
"It was the club where everything began, the club that gave me my chance. Everyone knows the affection I have for Remo. I am happy to see a club from the North playing in Serie A, it is very good for football in Pará," he told ge/TV Liberal.
For Remo he made 21 appearances, scored in five matches and won the 2015 Campeonato Paraense. He then joined Cruzeiro’s under-20s for a short spell, impressed at Náutico and moved to Albirex Niigata in Japan, his only stint abroad.
Back in Brazil he lifted trophies with Athletico Paranaense, Palmeiras and Atlético-MG before signing for Santos. Across 11 years as a professional he had never faced Remo until now.
"Of course there will be emotion in this match, especially for me, because it was where it all began. I hope it is a great game and that the best team wins. What matters is the love of football, and I believe whoever competes more will win."
This season he has played 11 times for Santos, scoring once against Noroeste in the seventh round of the Paulistão and providing an assist in the 6-0 win over Velo Clube that sealed a quarter-final place. With Gabriel Barbosa recovering from oedema in the soleus of his right calf, Rony could lead the line against Remo at 19:00 on Thursday 2 April in the ninth round of the Brasileirão.
