Wayne Rooney has called for Arne Sot to make a ‘big decision’ and take Mohamed Salah out the Liverpool team.
Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, a result that leaves the Premier League champions 11th in the table. The Reds have lost six of their last seven league games, having opened the season with five straight wins before a drastic decline.
Mohamed Salah’s performances have been criticised during the downturn. Against Forest, Salah made 10 unsuccessful dribbles, the most by any player in a single Premier League game this season, according to WhoScored.
The 33-year-old was named PFA Player of the Year last season but has struggled to replicate those performances this time around. His lack of contribution defensively has led Rooney to suggest he should be removed from the team.
“If I was Slot, I’d try and make a big decision just so it has an impact on the rest of the team,” said Rooney in The Wayne Rooney Show podcast.
“Salah is not helping them defensively. If you’re one of the players who they’ve signed and you’re on the bench and you’ve seen him not running – and again he’s a club legend and everything he’s done for the club – but if you’re on the bench, then what message does that send to you?
“They’re going through a hard time, aren’t they? You’ve probably got to look at the effect of what sadly happened to Jota. What effect does that have on the players because that’s his team-mates? That surely has to have an effect.
“But then there’s no excuse for not fighting and not tackling.”
