Roord happy for Manchester City to carry the underdog tag | OneFootball

Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord says that she is happy for the club to carry the underdog tag in the Barclays Women’s Super League title race.

Reigning Barclays Women’s Super League champions Chelsea are the red-hot favourites to retain their crown for yet another year but Manchester City went into the Christmas break in second place, just three points adrift of the South West Londoners.

When speaking in a Manchester City media session, midfielder Roord said that she is happy for people to overlook The Cityzens’ title threat.

“I’m fine with that actually,” Roord said. “I don’t really look at what other people are saying; if they see us as the underdog, I’m fine with that.

“We can just focus on ourselves. We are in a really good position after beating Everton, so everything is possible for the second half of the season.”

Manchester City failed to win any silverware in 2022/2023 and Roord says that she is keen to help the club end their short trophy drought this season.

She said “As players, you always want to win titles or cups, especially in this club. It’s not that easy in England as there are many good teams but I think we have the qualities to make that happen.”

Roord was Manchester City’s only new addition in the summer transfer window. The Dutch international wants to keep growing in the side but she is happy with how things have gone so far on a personal level.

“I’m very happy and I’ve enjoyed being here at Manchester City with the way we play, the league and the teams we play,” Roord said. “It’s gone okay so far.

“Obviously, there are always things to improve. I think I’ve settled quite well and it didn’t take me super-long to play my own game. So far, so good.”

Roord started all 10 of Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures in the first half of the season while she contributed an impressive six goals. She will be hoping to build on her good form when The Cityzens return to competitive action in mid-January.
