Rosario Central must settle Mauricio Martínez’s next step, with Unión pushing to extend his stay and Barcelona SC monitoring the situation.

According to Radiogol.com, the midfielder’s Unión deal ends on 31 December, while his registration remains with Rosario Central until the end of 2026.

Unión want a fresh loan after letting a purchase option lapse at the end of November, but rival offers at home and abroad are complicating talks.

In the last window he was told he was not in Ariel Holan’s plans, then Holan departed, reopening the debate in Rosario. The next sporting director could either reintegrate Martínez or sanction another exit, and indications are they may prefer to move him on.

Barcelona SC are exploring Martínez as a 2026 midfield option and have enquired about his situation following the end of his Unión spell.

He previously impressed at Liga de Quito, joining in 2023 and becoming a regular in a side that won LigaPro and the Copa Sudamericana. Liga de Quito sounded him out in early 2024, and he departed that year amid turnover following Luis Zubeldía’s exit. Independiente del Valle had tracked him before his move to Unión.

Barcelona SC are seeking cover for Johnny Quiñónez and could also lose Joaquín Valiente, which makes the Argentine an appealing candidate for the middle.

With Unión’s need, Central’s uncertainty and interest from elsewhere, Martínez’s future remains open, and any decision will shape both clubs’ plans.
