Liam Rosenior has backed Cole Palmer and said the midfielder converts his late chance against Leeds ‘999 times out of 1000’.
Palmer was guilty of one of the misses of the Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge, as he somehow blazed over with the goal gaping. The miss cost Chelsea three points against Leeds, after the West Londoners had earlier blown a two-goal lead.
Joao Pedro had fired Chelsea ahead following Palmer’s through ball, before the latter doubled Chelsea’s lead from the penalty spot.
Leeds got back into the game via a penalty of their own, as Lukas Nmecha blasted home. Some poor Chelsea defending then allowed Leeds to level, with Noah Okafor converting amid a panicked penalty box.
Chelsea pushed forward for a winner, with Pedro heading just over, before Palmer’s astonishing miss. Arriving to meet Caicedo’s cross in stoppage time, Palmer turned the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box. It’s a chance that had an expected goals (xG) figure of 0.91.
Rosenior defended Palmer for the moment and said Chelsea were punished for not killing the game.
“He’s in the position, 999 times out of 1000, he scores, it was just that one in that moment,” he said at his post-match press conference.
“We shouldn’t be in that position. The game should be done at 2-0. I need to show the players certain things to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
