A beaming Liam Rosenior is delighted that Reece James has signed a new contract with Chelsea, calling the right-back the “best footballer in the world in his position”.
The Blues captain had less than 18 months to run on his previous terms and his new deal fits into the club’s “incentivised wage structure”, according to The Athletic.
Rosenior revealed that James “had many opportunities” to leave Stamford Bridge in his career, adding that his decision to commit his future to the west London outfit is an affirmation the club is going in the right direction.
“I can’t stop smiling because we’ve secured the best footballer in the world in his position,” the Chelsea boss said ahead of this Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United.
“He had many opportunities to leave this club. It’s not just about the size and the stature of the club that he’s come through, it’s about his belief and confidence in what we’re doing and where we want to go. We’ve had many conversations about it.
“For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step.”
When asked why he thinks James is the best right-back in the world, Rosenior responded: “Do I really have to explain that, when you see him play? When you see Reece from afar you admire him. He can play many different positions technically, he can score goals, defend, his athleticism.
“The thing that impresses me most is his humility. You realise why he’s having and will have the career he’s had as captain of Chelsea. He will be our leader for as long as I’m here.
“It has been a really good two-and-a-half months with him.”
