Rossi returns to La Fortaleza on Thursday as Flamengo face former club Lanús in the Recopa Sudamericana at 21:30, Brasília time. The Buenos Aires-born Argentinian goalkeeper has already stood out against compatriot opposition during the club’s victorious 2025 Libertadores campaign.

He spent less than a year at Lanús, joining in July 2019 and leaving in March 2020 during the pandemic. According to Globo.com, the Boca Juniors loanee made 30 appearances, nearly moving to Banfield before the grená side stepped in, and he has kept fond memories of the spell.

That stint sharpened his work with the ball at his feet, long a criticism at Boca. He worked under Luis Zubeldía, now at Fluminense, and returned readier to claim the number one shirt. His exit followed the expiry of the loan despite the board’s wish to retain him at the time.

La Fortaleza has staged several landmarks for him. In 2019 he saved a De la Cruz penalty after the midfielder replaced Carrascal for River Plate, though River won 3-0 in the league. His return to the xeneizes also came at the ground in 2020, when he replaced the injured Andrada. In 2022, with Boca, he was the shootout hero against Racing in the Copa da Liga after 0-0, a run that ended with a 3-0 win over Tigre in the final.

His standout memory at the ground is Lanús beating Boca Juniors 2-1 in 2019. He hopes this reunion is kinder still, with Flamengo and their goalkeeper chasing a first trophy of 2026. The return is next Thursday at the Maracanã.
