Rossi starred as Flamengo lifted the Carioca crown on penalties against Fluminense, the goalkeeper decisive in the shootout at the Maracanã.

According to Globo.com, he was scarcely troubled in open play, made a fine save from Lucho, then denied Guga and Otávio from the spot.

Varela kept it simple, drew a first-half booking for Serna, but erred on a clearance before John Kennedy missed. Léo Ortiz was dominant aerially and converted his kick. Léo Pereira impressed at the back, went close with a header before the interval, and also scored in the shootout.

Alex Sandro won his duel with Canobbio and grew as Everton arrived, supplying a cross that brought Arrascaeta’s best chance. Erick Pulgar was the side’s standout before the break but faded badly after it. Jorginho controlled the tempo and opened the shootout by finding the corner.

Arrascaeta was largely subdued aside from his second-half header. Pedro saw little service, his tame effort one of Flamengo’s two attempts on target while he was on. Samuel Lino struggled throughout and feigned contact to the face in a flashpoint with Canobbio, while Carrascal endured the toughest night and was loudly booed off.

From the bench, Everton twice threatened down the left and converted his penalty. Lucas Paquetá offered little but scored his kick. Luiz Araújo came on late for the shootout and saw Fábio save his attempt. On debut, Leonardo Jardim’s calls on Carrascal and Samuel Lino were questionable, yet he ended his first game as a champion.
