Bolton Wanderers have eyed a swoop for Rotherham United forward Sam Nombe ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

Wanderers are vying for a long-awaited Championship return, and currently sit six points adrift of the League One automatic promotion spots, albeit second-place Lincoln City have a game in hand on Steven Schumacher's men.

Meanwhile, Rotherham have serious relegation worries and sit two points adrift of safety despite their 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Northampton Town on Tuesday.

The South Yorkshire club's transfer business has seen them acquire highly-rated youngster Harry Gray on loan from Leeds United, whereas fellow striker Nombe has been eyed by League One rivals Bolton.

Nombe has been restricted to just 12 third-tier appearances this season, courtesy of injury problems, but he has shown his attacking prowess by notching six league goals for Rotherham.

Rotherham have set Bolton a £2million asking price for Nombe as they battle to stave off the threat of relegation to League Two.

Football League World asked our Millers fan pundit, Tom Eyre, if the South Yorkshire club should cash in on the 27-year-old, or if they would be silly to let him go when they are struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Eyre said: "I think it very much depends. £2m is a lot of money for a League One club to turn down, and to offer. I think that the chances of us getting £2m for Sam Nombe are very low, because I don't think Bolton Wanderers have £2m to spend on Sam Nombe.

"Having said that, £2m is a lot of money for Rotherham United. Although we wouldn't be able to turn around that money in due course in January, it will go a long way in the summer, when Sam Nombe has a year left on his contract, and the asking price of £2m is going to obviously decrease.

"I think £2m with add-ons is something that you can't possibly turn down. But having said that, I don't think a League One club is going to stump that money up and neither do I think that we'll accept it with this short turnaround, with only a few days left of the transfer market.

"I think it would be silly to let him go at this point in the transfer window, with the club in the position it's in."

Matt Hamshaw needs to keep Sam Nombe to achieve League One survival

Rotherham were only relegated from the Championship to League One in 2024, but they are currently in danger of dropping to League Two.

Only bottom side, Port Vale, who are rooted to the bottom of the third tier, have managed fewer League One wins than Matt Hamshaw's side this season.

However, Nombe, who is scoring at an average of one goal every two games in the third tier, has the credentials to fire his side away from the relegation zone.

Therefore, the Millers should not entertain the idea of selling the 27-year-old, especially with so little time remaining in the transfer window, as summarised by Eyre.

Meanwhile, Rotherham can bolster their survival chances by building on their win over Northampton with a victory at Exeter City this Saturday.
