Rough patch: Léo Jardim tops costly errors, eyes comeback at Vasco

Goalkeeper Léo Jardim is going through his most turbulent spell wearing the Vasco shirt. Targeted by harsh criticism and recent boos from part of the crowd at São Januário, the No. 1 leads an uncomfortable statistic in the Brazilian Championship. According to a statistical survey by Gato Mestre, the Vasco goalkeeper is the player in his position with the most decisive mistakes that directly resulted in opponents’ goals in the 2026 Série A, with five errors in total.

Recent slip-ups weighed heavily on that number: in the 3-0 defeat to Santos, the goalkeeper made two crucial mistakes on the goals scored by Willian Arão and Luan Peres. In the 4-1 loss to Palmeiras, Léo Jardim made another mistake on Maurício’s play by letting the ball slip under his arms, in addition to showing questionable positioning on Flaco López’s goal.

Despite the pressure from the stands, head coach Pedro Emanuel publicly came to the defense of his captain and highlighted the No. 1’s leadership role in Vasco’s locker room:

“How many clear chances did he have to intervene? Sometimes we create a narrative when, for example, against Olimpia, he put in an almost perfect performance. Eventually, on the third goal (Maurício’s goal), I can agree with you (about the mistake). But Léo does not stop being who he is and helping the team. He will have off moments, like everyone else, but we have to know how to deal with that. Motivate him. He has been very important for us, not only in the game, but in the locker room as well, and I value that a lot.”

Léo Jardim’s cup pedigree and chance for redemption at Vasco

This inconsistent spell stands in direct contrast to the player’s decisive track record in knockout matches. The goalkeeper became the main pillar of the club’s best Copa do Brasil campaigns in the last decade: in 2024, he secured Vasco’s place in the semifinal after saving penalties against Água Santa, Fortaleza and Athletico-PR; in 2025, during the runner-up campaign, he saved six spot-kicks in the shootouts against Operário-PR, Botafogo and Fluminense.

In the current 2026 edition, Léo Jardim was also key with solid performances to eliminate rivals Fluminense in the round of 16. The chance for immediate redemption comes this Wednesday (26), at 9:30 p.m., against Vitória, at São Januário, in the opening match of the quarterfinals.
