Flamengo’s defeat to Fluminense on Sunday left them clinging on in the Campeonato Carioca, but results since have offered respite.
According to Globo.com, Flamengo have four points and only one Taça Guanabara match left after their fifth round was brought forward for the under-20s. They sit penultimate in Group B behind Botafogo on nine, Madureira and Boavista on six, and Nova Iguaçu on five.
Flamengo do not play next round and must see at least two of four rivals slip. Madureira cannot take two points from six, if they take one, Flamengo must overturn a three-goal difference. They face Vasco and Volta Redonda.
Boavista cannot take two from six, if they take one, Flamengo must make up two goals on difference. They play Sampaio Corrêa and Bangu.
Nova Iguaçu cannot take three from six, if they take two, Flamengo need a five-goal swing. They meet Bangu and Portuguesa.
Maricá cannot take six from six, if they take four, Flamengo need to erase a one-goal deficit. They face Volta Redonda and Fluminense.
Flamengo could be out before the final round if Madureira win at Vasco on Monday, Boavista beat Sampaio Corrêa away on Friday, and Nova Iguaçu defeat Bangu on Friday. They would then drop into the relegation quadrangular, where one club goes down to Série B.
Before the seven February finale, Flamengo face São Paulo at Morumbis and Inter at Maracanã in the Campeonato Brasileiro, then play Corinthians for the Supercopa do Brasil on Sunday at Mané Garrincha.
