Manchester United appeared ambitious and energetic as they snatched an impressive 3-2 win over Premier League leaders Arsenal. Despite being on the back foot for much of the match, Manchester United were highly impressive on the attack, handing the hosts their first home defeat of the season.
Naturally, all eyes were on interim head coach Michael Carrick, who led United to a respectable 2-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford last weekend. With plenty of reviews of Carrick’s performance streaming in, United legend Roy Keane was sure to get a word in as well.
“They played with more freedom and came to win the game,” Keane began. “To get that momentum and to score a brilliant goal like that off the bench, it shows a good attitude and mindset,” he said, referring to Matheus Cunha’s winner.
Speaking of Cunha, do you know every Brazilian player to play for Man United?
“They will be growing in confidence. They are playing with a lot more freedom. There is a full group, there are no more distractions and can focus on league form. They are producing.
“I felt United would get a result today, I was thinking more of a draw. They have momentum and all of a sudden, you’re thinking they have a great chance at the top four,” Keane continued.
“”If they play with that confidence and belief, you give the manager and the staff credit. The players are turning up,” the former United captain concluded, making sure to praise Carrick himself.
Still, it appears that Keane is not as excited about Carrick’s bright start to life at Old Trafford as many others.
While others on the Sky Sports panel were raving about Carrick following the Arsenal win, Keane decided to ruin the party.
“You’re being silly now. Two great performances, but anyone can win two games,” he said.
“Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job. Absolutely not,” Keane harshly said of Carrick.
“They need a bigger and better manager. But he has got the opportunity and what a chance for him, and you know what, he’s taking it,” Keane concluded, suggesting that a high-profile manager with more experience could be a better fit for a club of this stature.
While many fans may be excited about Carrick’s start to his interim role, it appears that Keane wants to ensure that they do not get ahead of themselves, especially if the team’s form under Carrick drops off at some point. After all, he may be a good fit at the club, but he still needs more experience and silverware before he can become an elite manager.
