Toby Alderweireld still has hope that he can play for Royal Antwerp this season. The 36-year-old defender is recovering from a leg injury, but is doing everything he can to get back on the pitch.
Antwerp announced in mid-March that Alderweireld may have played his last match for the club. Alderweireld himself is doing everything he can to be able to play a significant role in the last matches. “It’s going well and not well’, he said to De Ideale Wereld.
“I’m recovering well, but it’s a very serious injury. It’s going to be touch and go to play this season. The timing of my injury is a bit unfortunate, but I’ve been very lucky to have been injured so little in my career. I’m taking every positive thing with me, I’m trying to get a little better every day.”
At the same time, Alderweireld remained realistic. “I want to make the best of it. But yes, there is still a chance that I will not play anymore. I will at least get on the field, if necessary in a wheelchair”, he promised.
Antwerp are currently sixth out of sixth in the Pro League’s championship round, sitting 16 points off Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League qualifying spot.
