Ruben Amorim and his big-name stars let United down vs Wolves

Manchester United failed to beat bottom-of-the-barrel Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday, and had to be content with only a point courtesy of their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

As has been the norm this season, the Red Devils reverted to type after their hard-fought win over Newcastle last week.

Ruben Amorim once again tweaked his formation, playing three at the back at times, and while he must have been hoping to surprise the opposition, his own team ended up more confused.

Each time the visitors attacked, the United backline seemed unsure as to who was marking whom. That was clearly on display during the attack from which the away side equalised.

Ruben Amorim made strange subs once again

It was Joshua Zirkzee who handed the hosts the lead through a deflected effort. But rather surprisingly, the head coach opted to bring him off for academy graduate Jack Fletcher at half-time.

With the game in the balance, the Portuguese tactician refused to go hell for leather, not even taking up the option of completing his five substitutions.

He waited till the 75th minute, and his first change was in the backline, with the impressive Ayden Heaven replaced by Leny Yoro.

And instead of sacrificing a defensive midfielder and a centre-back to bring on a striker in Chido Obi or an attacking midfielder in Shea Lacey, Amorim brought on Bendito Mantato to play as a wingback.

Big-name stars underperformed massively

None of the substitutions worked, with both academy youngsters looking well off the pace under pressure.

The 20-time English league champions had the chance to go fourth with a win, which was expected given Wolves’ struggles all season.

Despite missing so many key performers, fans surely would have expected all three points against the worst team in the division.

The experienced performers in Casemiro, Matheus Cunha all let the team down, while Benjamin Sesko had a night to forget, missing three sitters.

United are next in action away at Elland Road against fierce rivals Leeds United. Hopefully, Amorim can get the house in order by then. We have been expecting that for over a year now.
