Ruben Amorim: INEOS deliver verdict on United’s progress under Portuguese

About a year ago, Manchester United chose to place the reins of the first team squad in Ruben Amorim’s hands. The Red Devils had decided to part ways with former manager Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the campaign.

Amorim’s high-flying Sporting side had captured the imagination of the Old Trafford hierarchy, and he was deemed the ideal man to script the Premier League giants’ return to their heyday.

Unfortunately, the Portuguese head coach endured a rocky first six months at the helm, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final and a 15th-place finish in the league.

United banking on long-term plan

Amid widespread calls for Amorim’s head, INEOS remained calm and chose to stick to their plan over the summer.

United had struggled for goals last season and subsequently invested over £200 million in Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. The Red Devils also decided to address their long-standing goalkeeping woes by signing Senne Lammens.

A slow start to the campaign, however, piled the pressure on Amorim. The Portuguese tactician, though, managed to navigate through troubled waters and is now enjoying a golden run.

United sit sixth in the Premier League table after nine games, two points behind Bournemouth in second.

Most importantly, Amorim’s side has won four of their last five league games, scoring 11 goals and conceding seven. The Portuguese’s efforts have already struck a chord with the club’s hierarchy.

INEOS pleased with the progress

According to Sky Sports, the decision-makers at the Theatre of Dreams are pleased with the club’s progress under Amorim so far.

“Manchester United bosses are quietly satisfied with their progress after securing three straight wins for the first time in 18 months – but know there is still much to do before the men’s team can compete regularly at the top of the table.”

“The team’s recent run of impressive results has not been met with overt celebrations in the executive offices at the Carrington training ground.

“Rather, it has reassured the club hierarchy that the tough decisions taken are starting to have an impact on the pitch and strengthened their resolve to continue with the long-term plan.

“Ruben Amorim has targeted a place in Europe for next season, and certainly chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox would be satisfied with a top-six finish.

“As Amorim continues to develop his squad, no one at the club is getting too high when the team are on a positive run, or too low when results are disappointing.”

The report adds that United are unlikely to invest heavily in the squad during the winter transfer window. A new No. 6 remains on the agenda, but a move is expected to materialise next summer.

The Red Devils are keen to make wise decisions in the transfer market and avoid past mistakes to ensure the wage structure remains unaffected. There is a positive mood behind the scenes at the Theatre of Dreams, and the Premier League giants believe that they are heading in the right direction under Amorim.
