Ruben Amorim names the 63-year-old he ‘would put ahead’ of Marcus Rashford

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim explicitly told the press he would rather field one of his collaborators rather than Marcus Rashford.

The English striker hasn’t stepped foot on the pitch in the Red Devils’ last 11 fixtures across all competitions. His exile dates back to the Manchester Derby in early December. During this period, he only made the squad once, which was against Newcastle United in the final fixture of the year, but even then, he remained on the bench as an unused substitute.

Therefore, it has become customary for Amorim to answer one or two questions about Rashford in every single press conference, and his post-match presser on Sunday evening wasn’t any different. Nevertheless, the Portuguese opted for a creative answer this time around.

Amorim wanted to make it vividly clear that he has no plans to recall the 27-year-old anytime soon while addressing the press following the Red Devil’s laboured victory over Fulham. Hence, he insisted he’s more likely to field his goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital instead of the England international – or any other player showing complacency on the training pitch for that matter.

“It’s always the same reason [why Rashford isn’t selected]. The training. The way I see a footballer should do. In life. It’s every day, every detail,” said the 40-year-old via Sky Sports.

“If things don’t change, I will not change. It’s the same situation for every player, if you do the maximum and right things we can use every player.

“You can see on the bench we miss a bit of pace on the bench. But I would put Vital before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

Vital, who probably didn’t expected to hear his name in the presser, is a 63-year-old goalkeeper trainer who been collaborating with Amorim since their time together at Braga in 2017.
