Ruben Amorim says some Manchester United youngsters are ‘entitled’ after Chido Obi and Harry Amass’ social media posts responding to his criticism of them.

Last week, when asked about Kobbie Mainoo not playing or receiving opportunities, in his response, Amorim said: “(Harry) Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido is not always a starter in the under 21s.

“All these guys played when a lot of people were saying: ‘Sack the manager’. So, you can see that I’m not worried.”

It seemed a strange move to go at players who he wasn’t questioned about, especially given that Amass was Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month in November.

The midfielder then, in response to Amorim’s comments, posted a picture on social media of him holding the Player of the Month award, before quickly deleting the image.

Obi responded by posting a picture of him celebrating after scoring for United’s youth side.

Asked what he made of their responses, Amorim said: “Sometimes strong words are not bad words. Difficult moments are not a bad thing for the kids. They feel entitlement. Let’s stay, let’s fight, let’s overcome. I have that feeling all the time. We are not performing the way we should be on the pitch but outside the pitch, I am not failing this club. The players forget what it means to play for Manchester United and that’s the feeling I have.

“The kids feel entitled and feel free to respond. My office is always open and no one comes to speak to me. I didn’t say anything wrong. I just spoke about how the lack of playing for Manchester United. You go and see different realities and go and see that football can be so different.”

Mainoo’s lack of game time has been a widely debated issue at the club this season, with many fans feeling disappointed that a bright academy prospect has not yet started a Premier League game this season.

And the matter was amplified when Mainoo’s half-brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, wore a T-shirt at the United v Bournemouth game that read ‘free Kobbie Mainoo’.

On whether that would affect Mainoo, Amorim said: “No [it won’t affect team selection]. It was not Kobbie who wore the T-shirt. He is going to play if we feel he is the right guy. That is not an issue. I am not going to do something to Kobbie because of someone in his family.”
