Manchester United continued to sink to new depths in a 0-3 defeat to Manchester City on derby day.

Poor result

United entered the game in no great shakes, with only four points from their opening three games.

Nonetheless, City had lost two matches on the bounce and were actually below the Red Devils in the table on the morning of the match.

Ruben Amorim’s side actually had more possession in the match and eventually had a similar amount of chances but were ruthlessly picked off by a City side that really could have scored four or five.

Sadly for United, struggling with defensive errors and poor finishing is nothing new for supporters to process and both characteristics were very much on show yesterday afternoon.

Relegation more likely than Champions League

The result means that United have fallen back into the bottom half of the table and are currently 14th in the table.

Things could get worse as they face Chelsea next and Liverpool at Anfield in just over a month.

According to Opta Analyst, “Manchester United now have a higher chance of being relegated from the Premier League this season (11.0%) than they do of finishing inside the top five (7.3%) according to the Opta supercompter’s projections following their 3-0 loss to Man City.”

As things stand, only six teams are seen as having a better chance of being relegated than the Red Devils this season.

Constant poor run of form

Worryingly, it is not just a sticky moment or a tough run of fixtures, these types of results have become normal since last season.

The Red Devils failed to win consecutive Premier League games all season last year and have so far yet to show they can this year.

Amorim has now seen his side win just eight of his 31 league matches in charge, relegation form in a nutshell.

Their four points from four matches is also the team’s worst start ever to a Premier League season in more uncomfortable viewing for anyone with sympathies to the club.

United and Amorim will need a big reaction next Saturday evening when Chelsea and Alejandro Garnacho return to Old Trafford.

Otherwise, the pressure will continue to crank up to levels that even the most loyal Amorim fan may not be able to handle.
