Manchester City vice-captain Ruben Dias has firmly committed his long-term future to the Etihad Stadium whilst giving back to the local community once more at Christmas.
Since arriving from Benfica in 2020, Dias has established himself as one of the defining figures of Pep Guardiola’s era at Manchester City, playing a central role in the club’s most successful period in history.
His leadership on and off the pitch has seen him elevated into the club’s five-man leadership group alongside the likes of Rodri and Erling Haaland, with the Portuguese defender now viewed as one of the cultural standard-bearers within the squad.
Even during more challenging periods, Ruben Dias has been vocal about the expectations placed on players at Manchester City, consistently reinforcing the mentality required to compete at the very top of English and European football.
That mindset has been particularly important during transitional moments for the squad, as Manchester City balance success with evolution. Away from the pitch, Dias has also become a visible presence within the local community, frequently engaging with charitable initiatives and using his platform to support causes across Greater Manchester.
Now, speaking during a recent media commitment with MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Dias opened up on the unrelenting desire to maintain exceptionally high standards at the Etihad Stadium – a place he now views firmly as ‘home’.
“I knew the pressure of joining this club when I joined. When you sign and play for Manchester City, you are expected to win football matches and win trophies. It’s as simple as that,” Dias insisted.
“I’m proud to have contributed to the many trophies we have won in recent years, but I also know it’s never enough. We have to keep winning,” he continued. “Last year showed that if you are not at the level then you won’t be close.
“We’ve got to be close this year and keep fighting as we have in recent weeks.”
Offering his own thoughts on giving back to the Manchester community, Ruben Dias also insisted upon his feeling that the North-West of England is his new-found ‘home’, and a city he feels he has firmly ‘settled’ in to.
“As one of the captains – I know I have not just a responsibility for my team, but also the club and the city. I love this club, the fans and the city of Manchester. It is my home now and I am settled,” the Portugal international admitted.
He continued, “I care about helping people and if I can use my platform to do that in a positive way then it’s something I am going to do. When you are one of the leaders at a club, I believe there is an extra responsibility to help the community.
“It’s why I am proud to support City in the Community throughout the year. Putting smiles on faces, helping those who are less fortunate, it’s something that brings me great joy and that’s something I will always continue to do.”
Ruben Dias’ comments will be welcomed by Manchester City supporters amid ongoing discussions around leadership, continuity, and long-term planning at the club.
With several senior figures approaching key contract periods, including the likes of John Stones and Bernardo Silva in particular, clarity around core leaders is increasingly important for the club.
Off the back of committing his future to the club until the summer of 2029, the defender’s language offers an even clearer indication of where he sees his future, both professionally and personally. As Manchester City continue to compete on multiple fronts, Dias’ influence looks set to remain central to the club’s ambitions for years to come.
