Manchester United are in the race to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in January, but midfield remains the biggest area of concern within the squad.
Ruben Amorim’s preference is to sign players with Premier League experience, and United have been strongly linked with Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson. However, a deal for any of the three mid-season is considered too costly.
As per a report in The Guardian, United are monitoring midfielders Ruben Neves and Conor Gallagher as potential January signings.
Ex-Chelsea talent Gallagher is valued at about €40m-€50m by Atletico Madrid, who prefer a permanent sale, whereas United would rather sign the Englishman on loan.
The Red Devils also admire Neves, who pulled the strings from deep and raised eyebrows with his spectacular striking for five years in England’s top flight before leaving Wolves for Al-Hilal in 2023.
According to Defensa Central, Neves will be available at a bargain price during the winter transfer window.
His contract at Al-Hilal is due to expire at the end of the season. The 63-cap Portugal star reportedly feels he can make a difference in Europe.
As such, the 28-year-old is looking to leave Saudi Arabia and make a return to European football “as soon as possible”.
The Spanish outlet claim that the Saudi Pro League outfit would be willing to accept bids in the region of €10m for the Portuguese midfielder.
It is added that Neves’ representatives have started offering him to various clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid and United.
However, Real intend to place their trust in a younger midfielder. It has been previously reported that Los Blancos are interested in Kobbie Mainoo, who has yet to win over Amorim and earn a regular spot in his side.
Following the “rejection” from the La Liga giants, the likelihood of Neves returning to the Premier League is believed to be “high”.
At the reported asking price, signing the ex-Wolves leader should be a no-brainer for United, who would then be able to go all out for an attacking reinforcement like Semenyo in January.
