Rudi Völler has backed Julian Nagelsmann to rebound after Germany’s World Cup disappointment, saying the 39-year-old remains a top-level coach. According to BuLi News, the Germany sporting director believes Nagelsmann could be back at the highest level soon.
Völler reflected on Nagelsmann’s spell in charge, admitting he underestimated how the coach’s standing with media and fans had deteriorated. He said scrutiny became so intense that almost every decision drew criticism, regardless of the reasoning.
He added that the reaction was the same whether Nagelsmann criticised players or tried to shield them, leaving a no-win situation. In the end, he said, results are what count and they were disappointing towards the close of his tenure.
Germany’s campaign ended earlier than hoped at the World Cup, bringing Nagelsmann’s time as national coach to an end. Völler maintained that the setback does not alter his view, calling him a top character and top coach, and saying he is convinced the German will enjoy an outstanding career. He even said he would stake significant money on Nagelsmann managing another top club in the near future.
Nagelsmann previously led Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich before taking the national job. He is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading young managers.
