Rui Costa and Frederico Varandas sit together at futsal final as Benfica claim title

Rui Costa and Frederico Varandas were seen sitting side by side in the stands at the Taça de Portugal de Futsal final. According to Glorioso 1904, the Benfica and Sporting presidents watched on together as their teams contested the showpiece between Benfica and Sporting. Benfica beat Sporting 6-5 at the Multiusos de Gondomar to win the trophy for the ninth time.
Their side by side seating did not go unnoticed among supporters and it quickly drew reactions in the venue. The occasion was also attended by Helena Pires, CEO of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Dias, Secretary of State for Sport, and Luciano Gonçalves, president of the Refereeing Council.
The final carried significant expectation, bringing together Portuguese futsal's two dominant clubs on a prominent stage. The joint presence of the club leaders underlined the importance of the encounter in the north of the country.
After the event, Frederico Varandas travelled to Vila das Aves for Sporting's Liga fixture for matchday 31. It finished 1-1 against already relegated AVS, a result that handed second place to Benfica.
Benfica sit second in Liga Portugal Betclic on 75 points, with Sporting on 72 and holding a game in hand. Between now and the end of the Campeonato Nacional, Benfica face Famalicão, Braga and Estoril.
