Rui Costa faces a potential double headache, with Benfica at risk of losing two senior coaches in the coming weeks. With José Mourinho’s exit considered settled, Nélson Veríssimo’s future is also in play.
According to O Jogo, Veríssimo’s contract ends on 30 June, at which point he is free to decide his future. The club want to keep the 49-year-old and he has proposals from Primeira Liga teams. He also has a renewal offer on the table.
This is his third season in charge of Benfica B, in his second spell with the side. The hierarchy have again backed him after a campaign marked by major restructuring of the competitive ranks.
Veríssimo is not closing the door on a departure, given prior top-flight experience. He led Benfica’s first team after the exits of Bruno Lage and Jorge Jesus, and coached Estoril in 2023/24.
In a turbulent finish to the season, Rui Costa may need to replace not one but two coaches. Veríssimo will have to decide by the end of June whether to begin a fourth season with the B team or take a new challenge.
