Irritation at Benfica with Jorge Mendes is growing, with several figures in the SAD blaming the agent for the impasse over the first-team head coach. Some argue Rui Costa should demand more of him.
According to Correio da Manhã, the row centres on José Mourinho’s departure and the choice of his successor. Mendes is regarded as the driving force behind Mourinho’s switch to Real Madrid, which undercut Benfica’s strategy to lean on his contract until June 2027 and reassess next season.
Madrid’s interest prompted Rui Costa to rush a renewal proposal, placing the decision with Mourinho. The coach’s exit not being completed within the shorter window discussed is also viewed as a breakdown, again with responsibility directed at Mendes.
The pursuit of Marco Silva for the Estádio da Luz has further inflamed tempers. The hierarchy believed Mendes had sway over the Fulham manager, yet Marco Silva has still not given an unequivocal yes.
Discontent with the agent also touches António Silva. No offer presented by Mendes is considered worthy by the centre-back, who continues to reject approaches to extend a contract that runs out next year, 2027.
