André, the 19-year-old Corinthians midfielder linked with Benfica, was sent off against Palmeiras after grabbing his genitals in front of an opponent. Corinthians finished with nine players and still held on for a 0-0 draw.
According to Glorioso 1904, the incident happened on Sunday, 12 April, in the first half with the game goalless. At 33 minutes, following a tough challenge with a Palmeiras player and with Abel Ferreira suspended, the referee showed a straight red, with footage circulating widely on social media.
The teenager has been highlighted as a potential addition for Benfica next season. The board led by Rui Costa is said to have held talks with the São Paulo club regarding the midfielder.
This season for Corinthians, André has made 17 official appearances, nine in the Brasileirão, three in the Taça do Brasil, three in the Brasileiro sub-20 and two in the Paulista sub-20. Across 677 minutes, the number 49 has scored three goals and is valued at 16 million euros.
The episode was highly unusual and is likely to prompt further discussion.
