Manchester United have been remarkably linked with what could be the most remarkable transfer of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Much of the talk in the last few weeks has concerned Manchester City and their potential incomings as part of a planned overhaul of Pep Guardiola’s playing squad, particularly after an underwhelming season.

Central to their plans is a fresh round of investment in the middle of the park, amid a perceived lack of youthfulness and energy as well as following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne, who is due to join Napoli on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract.

Hugo Viana and Txiki Begiristain are working hand-in-hand as part of a transitional process from one sporting director to another this summer, and are eyeing the likes of AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki as possible recruits.

But after comments from manager Pep Guardiola appeared to indicate a firm desire to have a somewhat small squad for the 2025/26 season, despite widespread injuries and problems last campaign, exits from the existing roster of players will be necessary.

Among those facing an increasingly uncertain future is £100 million forward Jack Grealish, who was most recently left out of Manchester City’s matchday squad on the final day of the Premier League season against Fulham.

Now, reporting from The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reveals a ‘rumour’ currently doing the rounds in Manchester United circles suggesting all parties may be interested in a deal for Grealish.

The current understanding is that such a move would be highly unlikely, particularly due to the rivalry between the two clubs and Grealish’s respect and love for the work Manchester City have done to ensure he has achieved his biggest football dreams over the last four seasons.

But Manchester City are certainly open to the possibility of the former Aston Villa captain leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer, and a temporary exit remains more realistic than a permanent deal.

Among the teams believed to be monitoring the situation are Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, while clubs in Europe could yet enter the race for the player providing the finances are realistic.
