"Run riot" - Ex-Wrexham AFC star Louis Moult tipped as perfect striker for Phil Parkinson | OneFootball

We spoke to our resident Wrexham pundit to get his take on what ex-player would fit into the current XI.

Wrexham are a team on an upward trajectory, as since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club in November 2020, the Red Dragons have transformed themselves from a mediocre National League side to one challenging at the top of League One.

The dream doesn't seem to be ending either, with Phil Parkinson's side picking up 13 points from the first 15 available to them this year.

This rise through the leagues has, of course, been achieved with substantial financial backing, but Wrexham have got their transfers spot on, with players like Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee standing out among a number of new additions.

Despite this booming period in their history, the Red Dragons have had some brilliant years in the past, including a four-year stint at the level above what they play at now.

During that time, they welcomed some amazing players to the Racecourse, including the likes of Mickey Thomas (see below) and Gareth Davies, who both played pivotal roles in the club's history.

Even in this day and age, Wrexham fans would certainly welcome the return of players of this calibre with open arms.

With this in mind, we decided to speak to our resident Red Dragons pundit, Liam Grice, to get his take on what ex-player could have the biggest impact on the current squad.

Louis Moult could support Wrexham's strikers

Despite the range of options available, Liam's choice came as something of a surprise, with the Wrexham pundit selecting an unexpected option from one of their recent National League seasons.

He said: "A previous player who would fit perfectly into this current IX is Louis Moult – a striker we used to have.

"Even when he wasn't getting any service and the team was poor around him, he would still score 10 to 15 goals a season, which was amazing considering those times."

Looking at how he'd fit into the current squad, Liam added: "The service he'd get in the current Wrexham side, with the likes of Elliot Lee, Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin, James McLean and Ryan Barnett, he would easily score 20 to 25 goals a season.

"He would run riot in this league".

Louis Moult's goalscoring record speaks for itself

Although Moult's goals for Wrexham came in the National League, had he not been there for the Red Dragons in 2014-15, they could well have been relegated to the sixth tier of English football.

His 15 goals that league campaign were pivotal, making up 27% of all the goals Wrexham scored during that season.

Departing the Racecourse for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell only furthered his game as Moult scored 51 goals in two and half seasons for the Steelmen.

Now 32 years old, he plies his trade at Dundee United, where he continues to showcase his finishing prowess, scoring 21 goals in 48 appearances for the Tangerines to date.

At this stage of his career, a move wouldn’t make much sense, but in his prime, Moult would have been a fantastic asset for Wrexham. A striker with a natural instinct for finding the back of the net is always valuable, and the Staffordshire-born striker has never had any trouble doing just that.

Jack Marriott, Steven Fletcher, Palmer, and Mullin would all provide suitable competition, but with Parkinson's eagerness for rotation, you feel that Moult could make his impact felt.

Turning the clock back five years to get the Dundee United striker in his prime would be a brilliant move, but Wrexham fans will have to look back with glee at the importance of Louis Moult in an ill-fated 2014-15.
