It is early days and nothing is quite set in stone just yet as pre-season starts to take shape but the latest murmurs surrounding Rangers are raising more than a few eyebrows. Supporters are waiting to see how the team will look under a new system and new manager while a lot of noise continues around potential incomings and outgoings. The growing chatter from down south though has caused quite a bit of bemusement, and ties in with how Rangers fans should not get too excited about the early pre-season window.
According to recent information coming from the English Championship, Russell Martin may be planning to construct his defensive unit around none other than Ben Davies. Yes that Ben Davies. The one who was surplus to requirements at Ibrox and the one Rangers have been trying to move on for the best part of a year. If the reports are true and Martin has indeed stepped in to block a sale then it is a baffling decision to say the least. It is the kind of thing that will confuse fans at Rangers. We have already seen Rangers tracking another journeyman defender in the mould of Kieran Dowell and this latest twist only reinforces those concerns.
Davies was never anywhere close to being good enough for Rangers. His spell at Ibrox was riddled with inconsistency and he regularly looked miles off the level required to play at the top end of the Scottish Premiership or in European competition. While he may have had a slightly better run of games during a brief loan at Birmingham City, the idea of making him a defensive cornerstone is absurd. Rangers fans know this all too well after watching him struggle against even moderate opposition. That Martin is considering him as a key piece raises serious questions. The Rangers player archives offer a strong reminder of what levels should be expected.
If Birmingham do persist with Davies it will suit Rangers fine if it means shifting his wages. But the very idea of building around him just shows how far apart the two clubs really are in terms of ambition and expectations.
