Wrexham have appointed former Newcastle United chief Steve Nickson as sporting director, a significant move in their drive towards the Premier League. The club said in a statement that he will work closely with head coach Phil Parkinson.

Nickson spent 15 years on Tyneside, arriving as head of youth recruitment before becoming head of recruitment in 2017. He previously worked 12 years at Blackburn Rovers and is widely experienced in identifying and developing young talent.

His remit includes establishing and leading scouting and player recruitment, supporting first-team squad planning, overseeing football administration, sports medical and performance, and the Academy, while helping develop the systems and processes to match the club’s ambitions.

On taking the role, Nickson expressed excitement and hailed Wrexham’s momentum, culture and clear ambition. He referenced three consecutive promotions and a seventh-place finish on their return to the second tier, and aims to strengthen recruitment, scouting and football operations with Parkinson and his staff.

Chief executive Michael Williamson welcomed him on behalf of co-chairmen Rob and Ryan, the board and management team. He highlighted Nickson’s Premier League experience and ability to identify talent in a competitive market, and he will work closely with the football staff while helping build wider sporting capabilities for the next phase.
