Wrexham's push for the Premier League ended on a dramatic final day, a 2-2 home draw with Middlesbrough and Hull City's 2-1 win over Norwich City denying Phil Parkinson's side a play-off place. It sets up a hostile reunion with Cardiff City in the Championship next season.

According to Wales Online, Wrexham started the day sixth on goal difference and needed victory to be sure, but they ultimately fell short by two points. Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were left disappointed.

Missing promotion via the play-offs also meant losing out on a first-season windfall worth at least £100million. Frustration grew as Norwich's late penalty appeals against Hull were rejected, a moment many felt might have changed the equation.

Another year in the second tier will reunite Wrexham with fierce rivals Cardiff, who earned promotion to the Championship by finishing second in League One with 91 points.

The clubs did meet this season in the Carabao Cup fourth round at the Racecourse Ground, their first competitive meeting in more than 21 years, where Wrexham lost 2-1 after Will Fish struck the winner for the Bluebirds. Wrexham will also face Swansea City again, who ended the campaign 11th after a 3-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.
