Ryan Roberto has addressed his Flamengo exit amid claims over contract demands, and has agreed a move to Shakhtar Donetsk.
"At no point did we sit down with Flamengo and demand anything. Something may have come out about that, but it is a lie. Neither I nor my family asked for salary or anything extra from Flamengo," Ryan Roberto said, speaking to ESPN Brasil.
"It was more a decision about a market opportunity. Reports said I had demanded to play in the first team, to have that guaranteed in my contract, but that did not happen."
Seen as a leading academy prospect, the attacking midfielder joined Flamengo at 15 and impressed throughout the youth ranks. As talks over a renewal progressed, obstacles emerged. He had a contract until March 2027 and chose not to sign a pre-contract, and amid the uncertainty he was sidelined.
After resolving matters with the club, he accepted Shakhtar’s proposal. The Ukrainian side will pay around R$ 56 million plus R$ 2.9 million in bonuses tied to contract targets, and Flamengo retained 10 percent of his economic rights in future sales.
As Roberto starts life in Europe, Flamengo turn to their next assignment. On Sunday, they face Vitória in the Brasileirão at the Maracanã, kick-off 19:30 Brasília time.
