According to L'Équipe, Tunisia’s 2026 World Cup descended into chaos on Monday as Sabri Lamouchi was first flagged for the sack, then formally removed, with Hervé Renard appointed hours after the 1-5 defeat to Sweden.
Lamouchi returned to the hotel bruised by insults from Tunisian fans in the VIP area. During a recovery session at Rayados, the federation announced on Instagram that an agreement to dismiss him had been reached and that Mondher Kebaier would be named, before deleting the post.
At the hotel, staffers Cédric Blomme and Olivier Pédémas clashed with supporters in a lift before security stepped in. Nuevo León governor Samuel García even watched in a Sweden shirt.
Eight senior players told Lamouchi they would walk out if he left, a stance reflecting reluctance to accept a Tunisian coach, with Kebaier waiting as technical director. Wahbi Khazri had been asked to assist Lamouchi and was floated as an interim option.
FTF president Moez Nasri, under board pressure, informed Lamouchi of his dismissal and readied a TV address. Renard, free since 17 April after leaving Saudi Arabia, accepted a short-term role and will work with Nicolas Baudoin, David Barriac and Gilles Fouache. Tunisia face Japan on 21 June in Monterrey, so visa formalities are not an issue.
Lamouchi signed a mutual termination. André-Pierre Gignac hosted him and staff for dinner before driving them back. They sought to leave Mexico quickly to avoid crossing paths with Renard, who had also replaced him at Ivory Coast in 2014.
