So now that 99% of Rangers fans are done with the joker that is Philippe Clement, how exactly do we part ways with him?
It is well documented that to sack the man will require around £6M if he is to be fully paid off. Unfortunately ex-Chairman John Bennett’s panic-driven decision to increase his wage and contract length, which Ibrox Noise knew at the time was a very bad call, has lumbered Rangers with an even tougher contract to pay off. So on the face of it we’re stuck with him, right?
We’re not quite going to blurt out ‘WRONG’ for dramatic effect, but we will confirm there are ways Rangers can get rid of him, but some require his consent.
The first one is to sack him, but unfortunately Rangers don’t have £6M in the bank to pay his full deal off. So that one, sadly, is out of the question.
The second one is the fabled ‘mutual consent’ whereby Clement compromises with the club at a reduced payoff. There were reports (without any basis) that the club could get away with a £700,000 payoff, but these went quiet. They were, basically, nonsense. The hope really is that Clement would take 50%, but even then, where do Rangers find £3M from?
The third one is his resignation – he won’t do this because he loses his payoff, but also because he has sworn on the soul of his unborn children that he loves this club and isn’t leaving. We also know he’s full of the brown stuff and changes tact at the drop of a hat, but we can’t rely on that. It’s different when there’s money involved.
And the last one is the Belgian FA’s own troubles with Dominico Tedesco, where Clement is on their shortlist to replace him – and they’d pay Rangers to free Clement up for the gig. That is the utopia outcome, that we get rid and get money as well.
Beyond all these, we’re stuck with Clement – there are no other ways to get shot of him, and no one else is likely to take him on.
His stock had already plummeted following Monaco, and it will be worse now. We can’t see any rival club trying to poach the guy.
But equally the current dire situation cannot go on.
