Sadiq crammed error, misfortune and redemption into a wild first half at Mestalla, in Valencia’s Copa del Rey quarter-final with Athletic Club. According to Superdeporte, his display captured the full range of emotions.

From the outset he struggled to settle. Slips in the area and errant choices betrayed a lack of confidence, and frustration spread around the ground.

On 26 minutes, misfortune struck. Robert Navarro’s wide free-kick glanced off Sadiq’s head and flew past his own goalkeeper, giving Athletic the lead.

Soon after, he passed up a near-certain equaliser. With Padilla stranded and the goal gaping, he shot wide.

He refused to wilt. Dropping deep to start a move, Sadiq fed the flank and continued his run. Rioja’s cross drew a misjudged take from goalkeeper Padilla, and the Nigerian prodded in the leveller.

It was a half that mirrored Sadiq’s footballing personality, unpredictable, intense and emotional. Capable of exasperating and enthralling in equal measure, he again left his mark on the Copa del Rey.
