Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage has revealed Jaydee Canvot was dropped from his squad for the 3-2 defeat to Ipswich after failing to meet the standards expected of him.

Sage said the decision was based on Canvot’s performance against Fulham and his level in training during the week, with the Palace boss now demanding a response from the youngster.

“It was a sporting decision,” Sage said. “I have to be honest with you, I didn’t pick him in the team because of his game against Fulham and what he did during the week.

“I spoke with him. I need more from him. I’m sure he’s about to do it and I wait for a good reaction on his part for Monday.”

Sage insisted the decision was not about asserting his authority but maintaining the standards he expects throughout the squad.

“I don’t care about my authority, I just want the players at 100 per cent of what they are able to do and when they give less, I have to shake them,” he said.

“It’s not a pleasure to leave a player out and not take him with the group and I always wait for the reaction of them.

“I prefer to make the choice between 25 players ready to play, fit and 100 per cent in mentality.”

But Sage stressed his decision was made with Canvot’s long-term development in mind and backed the young defender to improve.

“My view is not short term, it’s long term,” he added. “Jaydee is a young player, he needs to improve, he has a lot of gap to what he can achieve.”
