According to L’Équipe, AS Saint-Étienne could be facing a potential points deduction after a fan threw a projectile that hit an assistant referee during their match with Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday night. On Wednesday, the LFP will begin examining the incidents that took place during the latest rendition of the Derby du Rhône.
Saint-Étienne ended Sunday evening in a jovial mood after securing their first win against their local rivals since 2019. However, that mood could yet change after the actions of one fan. Towards the end of the first half, the match was suspended after one of the linesmen was hit by a projectile. The referee took all players and officials off the pitch for over 40 minutes following the incident.
Precedent shows that incidents of this magnitude result in a points deduction. In 2021, Lyon were deducted one point after a fan threw a water bottle that hit Dimitri Payet in the head. In addition to the throwing of a projectile, the LFP disciplinary committee will be forced to rule on the excessive use of flares before the match, which resulted in a delayed kick-off.
